Grants for Senior Citizens

When a senior citizen retires from his work he may not have saved up enough money to live out his retirement. Seniors do not have to just rely on the paltry amount given by social security every month. They can apply for grants for senior citizens which could really help their bottom line. There are many different types of grants for different situations. For example, seniors could get a grant for going back to school, or they might want to get a grant for fixing up their home.

Grants for School

For many seniors that are retiring, they might want to try something other than playing golf all days. Many seniors want to continue expanding their minds by going back to school. However, going back to college can be a costly endeavor. If an elderly person were to get a grant, then going back to school would be easier financially speaking. To get a grant for school, you would have to first apply for the FAFSA. This free application is used to determine whether you would qualify for grants. You have to be considered low income in order to get a grant. Once you qualify, you should be able to get the Pell grant. Other grants include the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Teacher Education Grants, National SMART Grants, work study grants and LEAP Grants.

Grants for Home Repair

Another type of grant that seniors may apply for is the home improvement grant. This type of grant gives money to homeowners so that they can repair their home. That way the homeowner could live in a safe place. This grant could also be used to upgrade the home too. For example, seniors could upgrade the electrical wiring, add insulation to the windows, or replace the AC. You would not be able to use this grant to make cosmetic repairs to your home. For example, you the grant does not pay for painting the rooms of your home. The division of the government that gives out these grants is the Department of Agriculture. In order for a senior to get the home repair grant, you would need to show proof of your low income and you will also need to show that you own the home.

With so many grants out there for senior citizens, there should be no problems with a senior citizen getting at least one grant. As long as you meet the requirements then you will get the grant.
